Seeds Take Control in Rotterdam as Top 4 Pairs Wait in the Wings

Seeds Take Control in Rotterdam as Top 4 Pairs Wait in the Wings

When the top four ranked pairs haven't even stepped on court yet and the draw is already starting to look inevitable, that tells you everything about how Rotterdam's P2 is taking shape. Round two of the Dutch Premier Padel P2 passed without a single major upset, and the seeded pairs are quietly, efficiently, making this tournament their own.

The Comfortable Ones

The most emphatic statement of the day came from Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz, who needed just two sets to dispatch qualifier pair Mario Ortega and Adam Axelsson, winning 6-2, 6-2. That scoreline wasn't flattering. Ortega and Axelsson came through the previa and simply found no way into the match from the opening game. Stupaczuk and Sanz controlled the tempo throughout and never looked like dropping their foot off the gas.

Lucas Campagnolo and Mohamed 'Momo' González were similarly composed, beating Luis Hernández Quesada and Javi Martínez 6-4, 6-3. Both sets stayed in their hands from start to finish, the kind of performance where the score doesn't fully capture just how in control the winning pair felt. Campagnolo in particular looked assured, and his partnership with González is growing in consistency as the season reaches its final stretch.

Enzo Jensen and David Gala were even more ruthless against wild cards Sten Richters and Albin Olsson, opening with a 6-0 first set before closing it out 6-4. Pol Hernández and Manu Castaño also kept things tidy, beating wild card pair Julián Prins and Youp De Kroon 6-4, 6-2.

The Ones Who Had to Work for It

Not every result was straightforward. Javi Leal and Fran Guerrero started the way everyone wants to: a dominant 6-1 first set against Enric Goenaga and Guille Collado. Then came the reset. Goenaga and Collado hit back hard, taking the second set 6-2 to level the match and inject some genuine uncertainty into the evening. The third set went to 7-5 in favour of Leal and Guerrero, but it required a real shift in focus from the seeded pair to close it out. Credit where it's due: Goenaga and Collado made them earn it.

Leal and Guerrero recovered from losing the second set 2-6 to take the decider 7-5, a reminder that winning ugly is still winning.

The sixth seeds, Mike Yanguas and Coki Nieto, also felt some pressure early on from Zalo Rubio and Andrés Fernández Lancha. The first set went all the way to a tie-break, a tense moment that could easily have flipped the match. Once Yanguas and Nieto got through it, though, they shifted gears sharply, winning the second set 6-2 to close 7-6, 6-2 overall.

In a qualifier-versus-qualifier match, Teo Zapata and Adrián Naranjo punched their ticket to the main draw with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Nacho Moragues and Timeo Fonteny. And the longest match of the day went to three sets: José Antonio Diestro and Marc Sintes eventually beat Manu Aragón and Albert Roglán 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 after dropping the second set in a tie-break.

What Comes Next

The full list of pairs who advanced sets up a loaded next round, but the real story starts Thursday when the top four ranked pairs make their Rotterdam debuts. They've watched from the sideline as the field has thinned out around them. Now the P2 enters the phase where the margins get smaller, the points matter more, and a first-round slip from a top seed would genuinely shake up the bracket.

Rotterdam is no longer warming up. It's on.
